"APOTHECARY TEMPLE"은 서울 중구에 위치한, 한옥을 공간지훈의 시각으로 재해석한 리테일 공간입니다.
전통적인 약방에서 느껴지는 고요함과 경건함을 현대적인 공간 언어로 풀어내며, 일상적인 리테일 공간과는 다른 느린 경험의 흐름을 만드는 것을 목표로 합니다.
공간은 익숙한 한옥의 형태를 직접적으로 재현하기보다, 전통 건축에서 발견되는 구조와 비례, 빛의 관계를 현대적으로 해석하는 방식으로 구성됩니다. 특히 조선시대 약방의 병푸에서 착안한 격자 구조와 은은하게 번지는 빛은 공간 전체에 정갈하고 차분한 분위기를 형성하며, 전통적인 요소가 장식이 아닌 공간의 질서로 작동하도록 합니다.
동선 역시 단순히 상품을 둘러보는 이동이 아니라, 하나의 경험을 따라 천천히 공간을 통과하는 과정으로 계획됩니다. 입구에서 마주하는 불상은 일상의 분위기를 전환시키는 시작점이 되고, 이어지는 공간의 흐름은 사용자의 움직임에 따라 고요함과 몰입의 깊이를 더해갑니다.
공간 곳곳의 빛과 구조의 반복은 일정한 리듬을 만들며, 절제된 형태와 표현을 통해 공간 자체의 분위기에 집중하도록 합니다. 이를 통해 전통과 현대, 일상과 비일상 사이에 자연스러운 균형을 만들어냅니다.
"APOTHECARY TEMPLE" is a retail space located in Jun-gu, Seoul, reinterpreting the traditional Korean hanko through the perspective of GGJH.
The project tranlates the stillness and reverence of traditional apothecaries into a contemporary spatial language. Rather than following the fast rhythm of conventional retail, it creates a slower and more considered experience.
Instead of directly reproducing the familiar form of the hanok, the design focuses on its underlying principles-structure, proportion, and light. A lattice structure inspired by folding screens found in Joseon-era apothecaries becomes a key architectural element. Softly diffused light filters throught the lattice, creating a calm and ordered atmosphere throughout the space.
Traditional references are therefore not used as decoration, but as a framework that shapes the overall spatial expeerience.
The circulation is also designed as more than a simple route for browsing products. Visitors move through the space gradually, following a continuous sequence of experience. A Buddha statue placed near the entrance marks the transition from everyday life into a quieter environment, while the spaces beyond progressively deepen the sense of stillness and immersion.
Repeated structures are layers of light create a consistent rhythm throughtout the interior. Restrained forms and materials allow visitors to focus on the atmosphere itself, creating a natural balance between tradition and modernity, and beteween the everyday and the extraordinary.
"APOTHECARY TEMPLE" does not recreate the visual apperance of a traditional hanko.
Instead, it transforms the sense of stillness, ritual, and healing found in traditional apothecaries and temples into a contemporary retail experience.
Through restrained structures, diffused light, and slow circulation, the space invites visitors to momentarily step away from everyday life, refresh their senses, and return with a renewed perspective.
